Most non-emergency care in the U.S. generally starts at a private physician’s office or walk-in clinic (usually called primary care). If more advance treatment is necessary, you may then be referred to a specialist. Finding a physician that you are comfortable with is important. If you do not have access to a health services at an institution, it is suggested that you consult with a friend or a colleague for a recommendation. You may find it helpful if a recommendation comes from a fellow international and if a physician speaks your language.
The American Medical Association has a website that provides a listing of physicians along with biographical information. When accessing this information, search by specialty (General Practice, Family Medicine and Internal Medicine are the terms for most primary care) and location (you can use the local zip code) http://dbapps.ama-assn.org/iwcf/iwcfmgr206/aps?seed=3166
Another resource is an electronic phone directory offered by InfoUSA. http://www.doctorline.com/docguide.htm
Note that your insurance plan may require you to use a physician or hospital with whom they are affiliated. If so, be certain to check to see what health care providers are available in your area.
